Dr. Ramani V. Marakani

Dr. Ramani is the Assistant Director at Intellectual Ventures. Dr. Ramani holds a Juris Doctor, L.L.M in Intellectual Property from Franklin Pierce Law Center. Dr. Ramani is also a registered Indian patent agent, an Indian Trademark Agent and a Patent Information Specialist. She also holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore as well as a Postgraduate in Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights from the National Law School of India University.

Dr. Ramani has been an IP Counsel for Phillips Electronics India Ltd., Bangalore, India for four years. During her career she has also been associated with the HIV patent LandScape Project with the International Technology Transfer Institute, Franklin Pierce Law Center, Concord, New Hampshire, USA. In addition, Dr. Ramani has also served as an IP Consultant for GE Global Research Center. Her most recent career role involved being associated with Grossman, Tucker, Perreault & Pfleger, PLLC, Manchester, NH, USA where she handled patent preparation and prosecution for clients including Intel, Applied Optoelectronics Inc.

Mr. Suryanarayanan A

A first generation serial entrepreneur, Mr. Suryanarayanan has the distinction of spotting opportunities where not many would look for. He has worked in Indian and MNC companies in various senior functional roles, mainly in the healthcare industry. Mr. Suryanarayanan's entrepreneurial journey began with a start up pharmaceutical company called Recon, where he was an integral part of the company's growth. He then conceived, created and implemented an IT-enabled health services company called Medybiz in 2000. Whilst managing Medybiz, Mr. Suryanarayanan saw an upcoming opportunity and founded Medi Assist. Angel investor, Nadathur Investments, managed this company before being sold to Reliance in 2006 along with Medybiz. Mr. Suryanarayanan then conceived, created and made operational a modern chain of pharmacies branded Lifeken in Bangalore in 2005. The business expanded to a 90 store operation in four states. This chain was later acquired by Religare in 2008.

A pioneer in the pharmaceutical and health service industries, Mr. Suryanarayanan has had his share of success in the field of education as well. As the Chief Operating Officer of the N. S. Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL) at IIM, Bengaluru, he helped infuse a paradigm change which incidentally also included a business incubator and a seed fund. NSRCEL made significant progress during his two-year term to become one of the leading incubators in the country. He now assists as a pro bono mentor at NSRCEL. He is on the board of start-ups, like Justbooks, MetaOme and Credence Family Office. He is also a charter member of TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs).

Mr. Richard

Mr. Richard has practiced law for ten years and has extensive experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the software, electrical, semiconductor, computer networking and data management fields. In addition to practicing law, he has drafted patent applications for a number of companies such as Apple, Texas Instruments, VMWare, LSI Logic, NVIDIA and NetApp. Currently Mr. Richard specializes in assisting startups to develop their patent and trademark portfolios.

Mr. Richard further has experience as a software developer with a biometrics application startup. He is also listed as a co-inventor on several issued patents and pending patent applications involving human/computer interface and smart phone technologies.


Dr. Rama Rao

Dr. Rama Rao has worked in the field of International Intellectual Property Law, Public Health, Bilateral Investment Protection, International Environment Law, Sustainable Development, Technology and Innovation and Arbitration, particularly with reference to foreign investments, intellectual property, technology, uniform domain names and UNCITRAL commercial arbitration matters.

His specialization includes International Law, Law of International Institutions, Human Rights, International Humanitarian Law, International Criminal Court, International Law on Terrorism, and Law of the Sea. Dr. Rama Rao has lectured extensively on intellectual property at the WIPO, the UN and at several universities across the United States. He was also an active member of the International Law Association of India.
